Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute
all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died,
a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered
him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along with
1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of
kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ’moment
of either opportunity or a moment of doom.’
’A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding
hostages that, should he be killed, they should kill their
hostages,’ he told the Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages
remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US
officials, including Secretary of State Anthony
Blinken, have assessed there is a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and
Hamas.

A senior Israeli official told the newspaper on Sunday, several days after Sinwar’s
passing: ’There are currently no serious cease-fire talks,

They added: ’It’s unclear how Sinwar’s death will
impact any potential negotiations, if they even exist at this stage.’
While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t
possible to confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order on the hostages, he said the
rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care for them.
He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late August.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were
’cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short time before we got
to them.’
The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel Gat,
39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.
Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage.
Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

Israel is able to make a deal with Hamas.
’It’s a moment of opportunity where Israel should be issuing a very clear call that anyone who’s

and their family out of Gaza to another country, as well as a lot of money.
’In order to encourage them to do that, Israel should also be reaching out to Egypt
and Qatar and tell them to renew the negotiations quickly, not on the deal that’s been negotiated without success for almost four months,
but on a deal that would bring the hostages home quicker and would obviously require
Israel to end the war.’
He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial point for
many Israelis who believe that their release would simply lead to another October 7-style attack

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at
the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and
Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ’unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his
huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ’only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn
and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:

In desperation, his daughter asked me to talk to him about it.
I approached the subject as delicately as I could.
Had he thought about what sort of end he wanted – would he prefer to be at home or in a hospital?
And had he made plans for his funeral?
He was furious with me, and absolutely outraged that I should
try to discuss it. He had no intention of dying, and certainly not
within three months.
Labour’s Kim Leadbeater, who tabled the Bill,
argues: ‘We should all have the right to a good life and, where possible, a
good death.’
And, as it happened, he was right. He responded well to
chemotherapy, and hung on for three more years, fighting to the end.
The intolerable pressure that would have been placed on that man and his family, if assisted dying had been an option, doesn’t bear thinking about.
He was determined to live – most patients are, in my experience.
To offer him the choice of dying would be to risk robbing him of the last three years of his life – years
that frankly I didn’t expect he would have.
Anyone in great pain, facing the shock of a terminal diagnosis, is not in a safe
position to make an irreversible decision. I’ve known patients
who ignored their symptoms until they ended up in A&E, perhaps on a trolley in the corridor or
huddled all night in a waiting room.
At that point, they might be desperate to die.
But 48 hours later, once they are on an elderly care ward and finally receiving
the right palliative care, it’s a different story. Perhaps a nurse is able
to take them into the hospital garden in a wheelchair, and
they can breathe fresh air without pain – and they’re glad to be alive.
That’s what we should be aiming for: good pain management.
With proper funding and investment in palliative care,
this should be possible for most people. Sadly, it’s not
the case right now, and too many people die drawn-out, painful
deaths, with unnecessary suffering.
The data shows that people who have seen relatives die that way are most likely to want the option of assisted dying for themselves.
I understand that. They are terrified of having to endure
what they’ve just seen a spouse, sibling or parent
go through.
But we shouldn’t be telling people they have
to choose between a bad death or an early one. There is another way: a good
death.
When I say this, people shout at me online, telling me I’m denying them their right
to choose. But their right to die doesn’t outweigh
the right other people have to live. These two rights are simply incompatible.

One man I knew moved, with his partner, into his aunt’s house while she was in hospital
recovering from a stroke – and he made it very clear he
didn’t want her to come home again. He’d claimed his inheritance before
she was even dead.
Advocates for the Bill point out that there will be solid safeguards
against coercion by unscrupulous relatives. But how safe are the safeguards?
The expert opinion of two doctors will be required before a High Court judge makes a decision.
But I believe that decision will be a mere rubber stamp: judges don’t have the time or the medical expertise to contest a doctor’s opinion.

There will always be crusading doctors who believe some illnesses should never be borne, whether that’s motor
neurone disease or, as we’ve seen in other countries
with assisted dying, mental illnesses. In the Netherlands, the
right to die has been offered to people with depression and autism, which should certainly not be regarded as terminal conditions.
Once we have assisted suicide on the statute books, the danger is that we,
too, will start to slip down this route and begin to argue that it should be applied
to the disabled and the mentally ill or impaired.
Other doctors will feel they are being placed in an invidious
position, subject to emotional blackmail by patients who have decided they want to be
assisted to die. How do I say no to a patient and then maintain our doctor-patient relationship?

If this Bill becomes law, I will recuse myself. I did not
train in medicine to kill people.

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute
all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died,
a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered
him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along with
1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of
kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ’moment
of either opportunity or a moment of doom.’
’A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding
hostages that, should he be killed, they should kill their
hostages,’ he told the Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages
remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US
officials, including Secretary of State Anthony
Blinken, have assessed there is a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and
Hamas.

While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t
possible to confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order on the hostages, he said the
rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care for them.
He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late August.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were
’cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short time before we got
to them.’
The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel Gat,
39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.
Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage.
Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial point for

Joker: Folie À Deux is heading to streaming, just weeks after its
theatrical release.
The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will be available to rent from home
starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros.

The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ’poised to lose at
least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run’ according to the publication.
The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about
$100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even —
when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.

ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5
million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally
after three days of release.
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures,
yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to
ignite at the box office.
Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night.
The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ’bleak’ and ’disappointing’
— officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him
an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took

from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ’If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at
the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment
to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and
Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ’unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his
huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ’only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn
and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
’With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia
and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ’open to
filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost
around 20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ’The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and
pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix
at the LA premiere September 30
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ’supported the
decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ’No one could get through
to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t
listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but
Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the
studio ’fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the
sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz
and Steve Coogan.

The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers.
Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box office competition during
its debut weekend could not overcome the bad reviews, enduring an 82-percent
decline in ticket sales.
The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four
thousand theaters across the US.

One of the hardest duties for any doctor is having to break the news to a
patient that their illness is terminal. Few people are ready to hear it.
And their first question is always the same: ’How long have I got?’
The truthful answer is usually: ’I don’t know.’
I’m a GP, not a fortune teller.
And that’s the single most pressing reason the assisted dying Bill should have been voted
down. To implement it would be recklessly dishonest – because
doctors can never see into the future, certainly not
precisely enough to pinpoint a date of death within six months.
A wise palliative care consultant once gave me a rule
of thumb: if a patient has been declining over years, they could live for years more – but if the progression is much quicker, over weeks, then they might have
just weeks left.
But every rule of thumb comes with exceptions. The prognosis for pancreatic cancer,
for example, is often grim. Its onset is quick, and death frequently follows diagnosis within three months.
That’s not always the case. One man whose family I knew well refused
to talk to his family about his pancreatic cancer, or his approaching death.
In desperation, his daughter asked me to talk to him about it.
I approached the subject as delicately as I could.
Had he thought about what sort of end he wanted – would he prefer to be at home or in a hospital?
And had he made plans for his funeral?
He was furious with me, and absolutely outraged that I should
try to discuss it. He had no intention of dying, and certainly not
within three months.
Labour’s Kim Leadbeater, who tabled the Bill,
argues: ‘We should all have the right to a good life and, where possible, a
good death.’
And, as it happened, he was right. He responded well to
chemotherapy, and hung on for three more years, fighting to the end.
The intolerable pressure that would have been placed on that man and his family, if assisted dying had been an option, doesn’t bear thinking about.
He was determined to live – most patients are, in my experience.
To offer him the choice of dying would be to risk robbing him of the last three years of his life – years
that frankly I didn’t expect he would have.
Anyone in great pain, facing the shock of a terminal diagnosis, is not in a safe
position to make an irreversible decision. I’ve known patients
who ignored their symptoms until they ended up in A&E, perhaps on a trolley in the corridor or
huddled all night in a waiting room.
At that point, they might be desperate to die.
But 48 hours later, once they are on an elderly care ward and finally receiving
the right palliative care, it’s a different story. Perhaps a nurse is able
to take them into the hospital garden in a wheelchair, and
they can breathe fresh air without pain – and they’re glad to be alive.
That’s what we should be aiming for: good pain management.
With proper funding and investment in palliative care,
this should be possible for most people. Sadly, it’s not
the case right now, and too many people die drawn-out, painful
deaths, with unnecessary suffering.
The data shows that people who have seen relatives die that way are most likely to want the option of assisted dying for themselves.
I understand that. They are terrified of having to endure
what they’ve just seen a spouse, sibling or parent
go through.
But we shouldn’t be telling people they have
to choose between a bad death or an early one. There is another way: a good
death.
When I say this, people shout at me online, telling me I’m denying them their right
to choose. But their right to die doesn’t outweigh
the right other people have to live. These two rights are simply incompatible.

If assisted dying becomes an option – and, despite today’s successful vote
in the Commons, there are plenty of hurdles ahead
before it becomes law – many patients with terminal illnesses will feel
pressure from many quarters, especially family members, to request it.
The choice comes with an unspoken threat: ’Death will be
awful. Get it over with and save everyone some
misery.’
Some adult children will be eager to discuss it with their
ailing parents, when instead they ought to be talking about how to ensure the best medical care and pain relief.
Many older people dread the thought of being a burden to their children. They are horrified, too, at the thought of spending their savings, and often having to sell their homes
to pay for care.
They might well feel that dying sooner would allow them
to leave their loved ones a bigger nest egg, and that they have
a duty to do so. The fact is that, for a lot of terminally ill patients, money will immediately
become a consideration when they talk about assisted
dying.
I’ve heard people argue that we’re not a nation of murderers, and no one would actually coerce a relative to die just to keep an inheritance
intact.
Their faith in human nature is admirable, but all doctors will be able to cite anecdotal evidence against it in certain families.
One man I knew moved, with his partner, into his aunt’s house while she was in hospital
recovering from a stroke – and he made it very clear he
didn’t want her to come home again. He’d claimed his inheritance before
she was even dead.
Advocates for the Bill point out that there will be solid safeguards
against coercion by unscrupulous relatives. But how safe are the safeguards?
The expert opinion of two doctors will be required before a High Court judge makes a decision.
But I believe that decision will be a mere rubber stamp: judges don’t have the time or the medical expertise to contest a doctor’s opinion.

There will always be crusading doctors who believe some illnesses should never be borne, whether that’s motor
neurone disease or, as we’ve seen in other countries
with assisted dying, mental illnesses. In the Netherlands, the
right to die has been offered to people with depression and autism, which should certainly not be regarded as terminal conditions.
Once we have assisted suicide on the statute books, the danger is that we,
too, will start to slip down this route and begin to argue that it should be applied
to the disabled and the mentally ill or impaired.
Other doctors will feel they are being placed in an invidious
position, subject to emotional blackmail by patients who have decided they want to be
assisted to die. How do I say no to a patient and then maintain our doctor-patient relationship?
And though it appals me to say so, there will also be
corrupt doctors who will make it their business to recommend assisted dying in return for a
fee.
If this Bill becomes law, I will recuse myself. I did not
train in medicine to kill people.
The fact is that good palliative care, where available, already gives doctors the ability to ease a death.
When someone is beyond the aid of ordinary
pain relief, we have the option to give deep
sleep sedation. The patient is placed in an unconscious state, no longer alert and feeling pain, and over the next few hours or days they will slip away.
That has long been the case, and it is the only way
assisted dying should be implemented in Britain. Anything
else is assisted suicide – and an insult to the Hippocratic oath by which every doctor must
abide.
